Rotary Club of Potters Bar

Today saw me on a journey (with Noel of course) to Potters Bar. It has always amused me (simple mind you know!) that Potters Bar meet in Brookmans Park and Brookmans Park meet in Potters Bar - why is that?! However, a very fine setting it is for Potters Bar at the Brookmans Park Golf Course; I was a little perturbed that we weren't allowed to 'change clothes' in the car-park though - does this mean that's what used to happen, what an exci [...]

Following the usual barrage of emails and telephone calls, I was able to complete (with Stephen Sypula's great help), the August TfL Newsletter. Hot off the press and circulated to all 29 Districts, Rotarians can now see what a superb job they have done with Focus on the Crocus. District 1260 alone have undertaken to purchase 225, 000 bulbs and rank 4th in the league table (how pleased am I...).

Time in front of the computer goes so fast, so onwards and upwards it wasn't l [...]

Work, Family, Rotary - I do believe I've almost got that in correct order!!

I have to say that being a working Rotarian (as many of you are), I thought I'd be able to fly the flag and say that you can do the DG role and maintain your work/life balance. At the moment I'm not so sure...

However, I am very glad that I work for myself as it has given me the flexibility to take on the role of DG, have a place on the RIBI Executive and be very actively engaged with Than [...]

NO CLUB VISITS!

Today is a day of Rotary 'business' - the morning has been mine to waste on email and scanning the internet, great fun but where does the time go? 12.30pm and off to meet GSE Coordinator Gary Eastman to sign papers and discuss the impending visit to New Orleans by Neville Hanks, Kate Lang, Hayden Littlewood and Natalie Sullivan, who will be supported by Team Leader Rtn Pamela Burns.

This exchange is of real excitement to all of us.

Harpenden Village Rotary Club

Off for meal number two today and a return visit to Harpenden (remember last week, they held Classics on the Common - I was keen to find out the end result!). Harpenden Village RC are just about to relocate from their exisitng venue, so it was a last chance to visit the Conservative Club before it gets 'redeveloped'!

Tonight Rtn Tony Freeman (Hitchin Tilehouse) escorted me. It was good to have some time with Tony and he is a bit of a 'Sage [...]

Watford Rotary Club

This was the first of two visits to Watford RC - they are holding their traditional lunch time meeting (which I attended today) and now also run an evening meeting to support the new members to their Club wwo have joined since the closure of Bushey and Oxey at the end of June this year.

Noel and I had a really good time listening to the exchange of banter and joining in the fun of a 'mock' handover... 'to me, to you, to you, to me...' sprun [...]

Well, what a day...

The RIBI Exec met for the second time this year at 9am this morning in Alcester - 9hrs later I was able to get in my car and drive home again but I did have the benefit of a 20min lunch break in that time!!

Truthfully, it is always a pleasure to see other members of the Executive and the staff at our RIBI HQ, but I have to say that even I found a 9hr meeting rather taxing... I should have twigged when I saw the 12 page Agenda!

As those of you who ha [...]

Hoddesdon and Hitchin Priory Rotary Clubs

Apologies to the members of both Clubs for the cancellation of my visits today. I had family commitments and am really pleased that Presidents Eric and John (respectfully) understood my need to reschedule; I am very much looking forward to meeting Hoddesdon on 20th September and Hitchin Priory on 6th September.

The Brickhills Rotary Club

As you know, it's been a strange weekend but how good it was to have the opportunity to visit The Brickhills today. Rtn Tracey Smythe (Hitchin Tilehouse) accompanied me to the MK Dons Stadium where this Club has recently relocated to. A stunning setting and a superb environment at the Hilton Double Trees hotel.

Some of you will remember that The Brickhills chartered in 2002 and is what was described as a 'new model' Club.

A Day Off...

Well, today I have a business meeting in London and then some down-time! No Rotary today which is actually quite strange... I have become so used to 'doing' Rotary that I feel a bit guilty not fielding email and telephone calls but I do realise that this is very odd behavious and maybe that 'implant' needs adjusting!!!

Seriously, it was great to go into London, people everywhere, hot tube trains and a definite sense of 'busi-ness' from tho [...]

Hey, guess what? I have actually done some work today!! A little bit of business development before attacking my emails once more!

Today is an exciting day... off to Harpenden Classics on the Common, then DISTRICT COUNCIL (No.1!) - ahhhhhhhh

Harpenden Classics on the Common was EXCELLENT! Liz and I arrived to see police coning off the road, yellow Rotary tabards everywhere and tents adorned with opportunities to buy food, car cleaning products or tombola tickets [...]

Another busy morning filled with emails and telephone calls - mostly related to Thanks for Life and of 'Focus on the Crocus'! I never realised just how much time I could use up 'doing' Rotary, however, a month in (nearly) and it's still good fun...

Dunstable Rotary Club

Lunch time soon came round and Noel collected me at 11.30am to be certain we'd arrive at Tilsworth in good time for the Dunstable lunchtime meeting.

After an afternoon of emails, internet surfing and tea, Noel and I headed off from the Holiday Inn to the Foxhills Indoor Bowling Club. Here, we would meet with members of the Aylesbury 100's Club

President Tony wasn't able to make the meeting, but President Elect Jon proved to be an excellent 'stand-in'!

Lunchtime - Aylesbury Rotary Club

Noel picked me up on time as usual and we set off for a day trip to Aylesbury. It's great being driven around by Noel, he's an excellent driver (ex-European Rally driver!) and great company. We took the country route and arrived ahead of time to the Holiday Inn just off the A41.

I was particularly pleased with this venue because it meant that I would have access to the internet all afternoon via their wifi and my laptop - brilliant!

[...]

Friday morning I drove to Hitchin for a catch up with one of our GSE Team members Natalie Sullivan. We chatted about what her experience might be like in New Orleans, the opportunities she has to develop her vocational knowledge and the cultural exchange that will be part of this overall adventure. It was lovely to be with such an enthusiasic person and I know she along with her team mates will have a superb time in October. We were supported by Russell Ball (Stevenage Grange) and David - thank you guys for helping make the evening so successful.

The purpose of the evening was to bring everyone up to speed on how our District is approaching Thanks for Life (T4L) and what national support/initiatives are available for us to work with.

Stephen sent out an email to all Club T [...]
