It may seem that the next Council on Legislation in April 2010 is a long way off. However, changes to the timetable for submitting proposed legislation mean that we must make an earlier start than usual in considering any changes we wish to propose in the organisation's rules.

March 8th 2008 - A Bad Day at the Office Print E-mail

garendonspeakers_2Not only Manchester United and Chelsea but Rebecca Mandall, Sophie Guy, Berkhamsted Collegiate School and Waddesdon C of E School must feel quite sad about this particular day in 2008.

Whilst offering our congratulations to D1240 and their entries into the above two events, (they won both the Young Chef and both age levels at the Youth Speaks), I wish to congratulate all four of our representatives who did D1260 proud.

$100 Million Challenge to End Polio Print E-mail

tn_end_polio_aA Giant Rotary Wheel and the words "END POLIO NOW" was beamed onto the side of the House of Commons to the left of Big Ben on Rotary International's 103rd Birthday on Saturday, 23rd February -- to start a challenge to raise $100 million to help finally to eradicate polio from the world. Polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985 and working with WHO, UNICEF and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary International has managed to cut the numbers of polio cases by 99 per cent. The disease is now only endemic in four countries: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Recently, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $100 million to help in the Rotary campaign and Google Foundation has also just donated $3.5 million.

It is with the greatest pleasure that I am pleased to announce that Rotarian Jack Sapsworth from the Rotary Club of Luton was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours List, for his charitable works, especially for the Pasque Hospice.

I am sure that you will join me in congratulating him on such an honour. Jack we are delighted for you and Lynne.

lend_a_hand_mowingAs some clubs once again dust off theirmowers and hedgecutters, get the truck ready for trips to the dump, make suretool boxes and DIY kits are at the ready, planning gets under way forLend-a-Hand day. 

Last year, several groups of clubs went offfor a day of odd-jobbing among the less able members of their communities. Itis great news that two more areas have declared their intention to join the funthis year - thank you Milton Keynes andHitchin Tilehouse.
