district_quiz_20-1-2012_640.jpgFirstly, may I wish all Rotarians and their families a Happy New Year.

2012 promises to be an exciting year – the Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and a potentially giant step forward for the organisation of RIBI.  The presentation of RIBI in the 21st century that I mentioned in last month’s Newsletter has been followed up by other explanatory articles on the RIBI website and I am grateful to those members and Clubs that have given me their opinions on the possible reorganisation.  I would appreciate as many Clubs as possible letting me know their views as I need to represent District at the upcoming General Council meeting on 4th and 5th February.

The crux of the changes is the that the management of RIBI will be handled by a new RIBI Board which will be elected for three years – this will mean that the current system of the General Council managing RIBI with the whole group changing every twelve months will cease.  However, the new District Governors’ Forum will still be able to hold the RIBI Board to account and recommend the Board to investigate and take action on any relevant subject.  The changes will need COL approval as well as several approvals at the Business session at the next RIBI Conference.

diabetes_uk_presentation_image_640.jpgThe first six months of my session of being District Governor seem to have flown by with two District Council Meetings and two General Council Meetings as well as visits to over 35 Clubs.

The last General Council Meeting at Alcester was a very interesting one because the results of the Quinquennial Review as well as the 2020 Vision Group report were considered.  All pretty heavy stuff – but it was good to hear so much sense being talked about the future of Rotary in GB & I. This has resulted in a number of changes being proposed to the way RIBI is run.  Broadly, the impact on Clubs will be minimal but from an organisation perspective the changes are significant and will bring RIBI into line with the way RI is organised. A presentation is to be circulated to Clubs early in the New Year which will detail the changes being considered by General Council.  However, a summary can be seen by visiting the RIBI website at http://www.ribi.org/resources/reorganisation-of-ribi. The page can simply be found by clicking on Resource Downloads on the left hand side of the RIBI Home page.

If these changes are approved by the majority of Districts, then they will be firmed up into some detailed proposals to go the Business session at the RIBI Conference in April.  The crux of the changes is that the Executive and General Council are abolished and replaced by a Management Board and District Governor Forum.  Further, the RIBI President is released form a number of administration responsibilities to concentrate on improving the public image of Rotary in GB&I as well as spending more time in Districts and with Clubs.

The make-up of the Management Board is still being discussed but will have representation from the incumbent District Governors and/or past District Governors as well as suitable qualified members proposed by District Councils. As a member of the RIBI Constitutions Committee these proposed changes have certainly meant that this Committee has been ‘burning the midnight oil’ but all of the changes are achievable and will mean that the whole administration of RIBI will be bought up to date.

hoddesdeon_dg_visit_pic_640_pix1.jpgThe District Council meeting on 23rd November was one of the best attended in the history of District 1260.  All of the motions that had been proposed by the various Clubs on the subject of length and location of the annual Conference as well as those associated with the amount taken from the annual sub to support conference were well put, debated and voted on.    The only proposal that was agreed by the voting delegates of the District Council was that proposed by Harpenden Village Club that up to £10 per member could be used to assist with funding of the annual District Conference.   Members present at the meeting are to be congratulated on the business-like manner that they adopted for the whole proceedings associated with the motions.

For those that were not present at the meeting, it was approved that the 2012/13 District 1260 Conference would be held in Jersey and that the necessary finances were approved as well.

Ann and I attended one of my fellow DG’s conferences in Llandudno over the weekend of 28/30 October and were looked after very well by DG Brian Kimberley and his wife Sheila.  The weather over the three days was excellent – shame the same could not be said for the traffic on the M6!

I was fortunate enough to attend the Rotary International Institute meeting that was held over the weekend of 18/20th November at Hinkley.  There were several notable Rotary speakers including Wilf Wilkinson from RI in Canada, Allan Jagger RI Director as well as Sakuji Tanaka – RI President Elect.  A wide variety of topics were presented and discussed in break-out groups.   It is clear that many changes are afoot in both RI and RIBI as both organisations look to become more modern and appealing.  The forthcoming RIBI General Council meeting on 27/28th November will begin to look at some of these changes and I hope to be able to report back to you before Christmas if anything significant comes from this meeting.  As I stated at the District Council meeting, one of our District’s Ambassadorial Scholars was chosen to be interpreter for Sakuji Tanaka and she did an outstanding job – please consider asking her to speak at one of your Club meetings.

president_jordan_receiving_the_charter_of_the_interact_club_of_heathcote_stevenage_from_president_bob_goodwin_rc_of_stevenage_640.jpgThe Interact Club of Stevenage was successfully charted on  Friday 7th October at the Novotel, Stevenage - congratulations to all those that had worked tirelessly to make this Club a success, but  particularly to Rotary members in Stevenage and Iola Samuels – the District New Generations Chairman.  An excellent crowd of people attended – including the Mayor of Stevenage.

At the present time, it is possible that another three Interact Clubs may be formed in District 1260 during this Rotary year.  This would be wonderful news together with many people in Rotary I believe that investing in today’s young people is one way of ensuring the success of Rotary in the future.

The ‘Frugal Meal’ Initiative seems to be gathering momentum with news of several Clubs raising money for good causes – keep up the good work.

Communications within District have been evolving over the past few years but we must be doing something right as a recent communication from Tony Bacon, Chairman of RIBI Marketing, PR and Communications to District Chairman Chalmers Cursley stated

john_bromley_andrew_gray_certificate_75_years_800_pix.jpgOne quarter of the Rotary year has now gone – the whirl of activity continues!  The visiting of Clubs continues apace – including one where it was announced when I arrived that they were going to have their “Frugal Meal” on that night.  Well done to Wolverton and Stony Stratford for a very well organised meal of cheese, biscuits, bread and grapes – I thoroughly enjoyed it!  They were able to raise £180 as the food was donated by the local supermarkets. I understand from District Communities Chairman, David Cassell that several Clubs have either held or are setting dates for holding their own “Frugal Meal” events.

Ann and I attended a fantastic event to celebrate the 75 years of existence of the Berkhamsted / Bulborne Club.  The meeting was held in the Deans Hall at Berkhamsted School – a magnificent venue and one that had connections with the original charter of the Club, as the then Headmaster was a founder member.  Lord Cecil Parkinson was the principal speaker who was very interesting and entertaining.  My claim to fame was that I exceeded all expectations of the betting members of the audience by only taking two minutes to present a special award from RI on the occasion of the 75th Charter Anniversary – most attendees had bet on at least five if not eight minutes!
