RIBI Conference
Written by Brian Doggrell

RIBI Conference at Blackpool proved to be an enjoyable experience with some excellent Rotary projects on show and of course those who saw RIBI President Allan Jagger at our Conference would have appreciated his sense of fun and honesty.  He tells it as it is.

At the AGM most Resolutions were agreed with the exception of resolutions 4/2008 – To replace the Executive committee with a Management Board and 5/2008 – To dissolve the Personnel committee.  These 2 were sent back to the General Council for redefining so that all Rotarians had an opportunity to understand what the changes were and how they affected the Clubs.

Once again there was a live BBC News 24 television broadcast on Saturday morning. The Rotary Young Citizen Awards. Laura Jones from Newsround presented the half hour programme which showed 5 award winners ranging from Young Carers to Fundraisers for a holiday home and a school in India.

Once again it proved that our youngsters are not all bad – there are some extremely hard working and community spirited people who are our future.  Yet more proof that our Youth programmes are worth the hard work involved.

All in a DG's Day

Congratulations to Milton Keynes who have become the first club in our District to have 100% Sustaining Members of our Rotary Foundation.

I have had many enjoyable club events this year and hope to have a least a few more before the year comes to an end in June. This is the time in our Rotary Year when competitions & tournaments reach their finals. Jill & I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to as many as possible and being able to talk to parents, teachers etc. hopefully promoting Rotary as we go.

We started the month visiting Technology Tournaments across the District. Seven in all and let me tell you that I can now build an Iron/Cardboard Bridge to compete with Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

I spent an enjoyable Saturday at the Milton Keynes Swimathon with great support from the various teams, representing schools, businesses & community, raising money for many local charities.

I’m pleased to say that my own club, Luton Chiltern, has taken the very prestigious Cup for Indoor bowls this year.

Hoddesdon run a story competition for juniors. ‘What I want to be when I grow up’ The winner gets to spend a day doing what they want & this year the winner will be going to Queen Charlottes Hospital to spend time with the Midwives. This is a seemingly simple competition, but takes a great deal of organising and involves Rotary, Schools & Community and there was great excitement at the finals.

Amersham, Chesham & Gt. Missenden run a similar competition based on Christmas & only 100 words. The children were delighted to hear their stories read out loud by a local actor using all his vocal skills to play the parts.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

‘ You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing there will be no result’
‘If we don’t change, we won’t grow’

I am very pleased to have two major district successes to cover in this issue, namely, The Easter Showcase and the Conference. Enjoy the newsletter!

"RotaryShares" as you are all aware is our theme from Rotary International this year.

May I start by wishing you and your clubsan enjoyable and successful year in all you carry out during the year?

For me the year started on a high at theInduction Dinner and gave Charles a real send off with a warm thank you fromthe District and made me think there's no turning back now and I feel veryhumble at the way you accepted me as DG Brian.

As usual the DG year begins with its usualclub visits.  My first was to Chesham whereI had the honour of meeting Rtn Ivor Nash Founder Secretary in 1947/8 andPresident 1953/4 he has worked during his 60 years as a Rotarian in allDistrict council positions and at 99 years of age still has a viewpoint to putforward. I look forward to meeting him next May when he will celebrate his 100thBirthday. He is a real gentleman.
