Barton Rotarians help to Bridge Continents by Dr Paul Biscoe
Written by Chalmers Cursley
On Tuesday 19th October 10 Rotarians from Barton-le-Clay provided a practical demonstration of Building Communities-Bridging Continents. This was achieved when they made their annual visit to the Tools for Self Reliance (TSR) workshop to refurbish old hand tools. TSR is a national charity which, at Milton Keynes operates within the Camphill community providing their adults that have disabilities with training and work whilst refurbishing old tools. These tools are then made into specific kits e.g. carpenter, cobbler etc. and are sent out to African villages to help the villagers become self-sufficient in their basic trades and needs.

Classics on the Common
Written by Chalmers Cursley
What a spectacle! 1200 gleaming classic cars massed on Harpenden Common on 28 July for the UK’s biggest mid-week classic car meeting, staged for the past two years by Harpenden Village Rotary Club  The vehicles, from all over Britain, included a 1900 Daimler type A, a 1925 Lancia Lambada, and a 1935 Alvis Silver Edge. Add to those an ex-Army Green Goddess, a wheeled tank, several buses and 125 motorcycles and you can see why the event regularly attracts up to 10,000 spectators from near and far.

As well as providing a major community attraction the event raises £10,000 for charity, ShelterBox being one of three main beneficiaries this year.

Marc Bows out after 55 Years
Written by Chalmers Cursley
Rotarian Marcus Plummer joined the Rotary Club of Luton in 1955 and now, the longest serving member, was recently awardedHonorary Membership for his dedication and service over many aspects of the Club’s work.  It was unsurprising that he became a Rotarian as his Uncle Alec Plummer was on the same Vocational Committee in 1958 when meetings were held at the George Hotel in Luton. Alec went on to become President in 1941-42 and Marc, as he prefers to be called, followed in his footsteps when he was President in 1993-94 after serving a very long apprenticeship.

Loop de Loop 2010
Written by John Moss
luing-freddy nl.jpgOn Saturday 12th June 9 volunteers gathered at The London Gliding Club to take up the Wolverton and Stony Stratford challenge of doing a sponsored loop-the-loop in a glider.

The weather was perfect for flying and after a safety briefing, one by one they took to the air.

Sitting in front of the two seater glider, our volunteers were airplane towed to 2000 feet before being released to glide. After a short while the pilot puts the glider into a dive towards the ground before pulling the craft up into a loop.
