Roundabouts and recycling Print E-mail
Written by Charles King

Does the lack of sleep show too much? Well, if it does, it's more than compensated for by yet another brilliant and intensive day.

After an audience with Mayor Fred, met with the Columbus transportation planning and engineering departments. Then taken on a whistle-stop tour of interstate intersections and bridges, and got taken round an asphalt plant and laboratory. Who'd have thought that so much thought goes into the stuff you drive on? Asphalt is the number one recycled product in the US, even ahead of cans.

And then there's the city's first roundabout which I was proudly shown! Apparently it caused more than its fair share of consternation amongst the locals. A second visit to CB (Columbus Bar) downtown area fitted the bill perfectly, and I couldn't leave without going round Wal-Mart!

Trust, Respect, Responsibility and Popcorn Print E-mail
Written by Roger Sharp

Another hectic but enjoyable day. I went out for breakfast and had biscuits and gravy?  Very nice.  Then we all went to Columbus Information Centre followed by 1 hour walking tour.  Then to Cummins Engineering Officers and met with the person responsible for its Foundation.

On to lunch and then a visit to a very impressive High School where they facilitate rather than teach.  Basic principles being Trust, Respect and Responsibility.  We were shown around by two 14 year old students who were polite, articulate and very confident which I suspect was typical of all the students.

Then onto ECO15 a learning centre attached to the University.  Then taken to Edinburgh where we had a short tour of a popcorn making factory making a large number of different flavoured and coloured popcorn.  Very interesting and very tasty.

I almost forgot we went to a children's play building where we made large bubbles and Mark got into a massive toilet!!!!

Attended Columbus Rotary Club for lunch.  No presentation just an introduction of team.  Then taken on vocational visits which were very interesting.  Charles got quite excited as he was driven along runway of local airport. Spending first night with our host family.

Chuck & Cathy's Print E-mail
Written by Atalie Gaines
After our first night and a busy first day, I've arrived at the home of Chuck and Cathy Bolls. They are making me very welcome. I am sure that I'm not being good company as the tiredness of travel is kicking in, but it is nothing that a good night's sleep can't fix and then I'll be ready for the next 4 weeks.

Day One Print E-mail

Arrived in Indiana at 9.30pm and met by several Rotarians with a 30 foot banner welcoming us.  And I wondered how we would recognised them!!!!

Took us to a nearby hotel and crashed out at 110.30pm.  The girls went earlier.

Made us all very welcome.  Only problem is leaflets have not yet arrived.
