Polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985, with more than $1.2 Billion contributed to the effort. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation praised Rotary for providing the volunteers, advocates, and donors who have helped bring about a 99% decline in the number of polio cases.
Bill Gates said “The world would not be where it is without Rotary and it won’t get where it needs to go without Rotary”.
For over 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease.
This commitment encouraged The Rotary Foundation Trustees to approve a special Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, featuring a certificate with the End Polio Now logo. In fact, Rotary’s dedication to the eradication of Polio is recognised and respected worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.

There are 8 Rotary clubs in the Milton Keynes zone and all 8 clubs worked together to put on an event to raise funds to help eradicate Polio from the world. The event took place on Friday 19th November at the Kents' Hill Hilton hotel. It was a very successful night with the event selling out. We were entertained by 2 acts form MK Vibe, Natalie Chua who performed some classical numbers along with her new single "Angels". Claire Dixon provided the dance music and entertained us all extremely well. There was a very successful auction for a round of golf at Woburn Golf Course, a luxury tombola which sported some excellent prizes and a fun casino which was run by the Rotary club of the Brickhills. The evening raised in excess of £5,500 for Polio plus |

In 2004 Rotarian Roger Borley and I, went to KwaZulu Natal in South Africa to see a completed sanitation block at Batshazwayo High school. This project had been the subject of a Matching Grant with the Eshowe Rotary club. This club had established The Eshowe Community Action Group, ECAG, over 30 years ago with the mission to provide education facilities for rural Zulu children. Whilst there, I offered to make a promotional DVD for them and needed some footage of poor education facilities. Roger and I were taken to two primary schools in a very deprived area and saw children being taught under the most awful conditions. It was raining that day and the water poured in through the rusty tin roof. We came away determined to help these communities build proper classrooms and we did. Some will remember the 'Dot Comedy' joke book that Wolverton and Stony Stratford Club produced. Funds raised enabled the two schools to be transformed.

It has become clear that the Pakistan Flood situation has deteriorated considerably since I emailed all Club International Chairs on 4th August. More than 1,600 people have died after the worst floods in the country for the past 80 years. As the floods have now spread to the Sindh province some 16 million people are directly affected. See BBC’s Orla Guerin’s report on a village slowly drowning in Sindh province. It is now consider that the devastation is even greater than the major Tsunami and the Haiti earthquake.
Today RIBI President Jim Moulson launched an ‘RIBI International Disaster Fund’. This was subsequently upgraded to a full Appeal. Monies donated to the appeal will be earmarked for Pakistan for long term sustainable projects. All donations to the fund should be made payable to the ‘RIBI Donations Trust’ and sent to Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland, Kilwarton Road, Alcester, Warwickshire, B49 6PB. Cheques should be marked ‘Pakistan flood’ on the back.

As of 30 July, the Horn of Africa is again polio-free, with Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda having reported no wild poliovirus cases for more than a year. The date marks a step toward the achievement of a major objective of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's new strategy -- stopping polio in Africa. The GPEI spearheading partners are the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the U.S.for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF Centers.
