District’s Youth Speaks final took place at Rothamsted Research Centre’s Conference Block – Fowden Hall – on Thursday 23rd February in front of an audience of some 80 Rotarians, parents and supporters. Judging the event were Patricia Seabright from Archimedes Consulting, Christine Sinfield and Glyn Thomas, a shopfitting fixtures director. Asking questions (for the Intermediate competition) was Mrs Christine Clow a retired teacher whilst yours truly took on that role for the Senior competition. During the interval between the two competitions Ken Scott (District Youth Exchange Officer) spoke on the opportunities available for the students within this programme and showed a brief video prepared by the attendees at our District Youth Camp last July.

Why Rotary Spring Clean (“RSC”): There is overwhelming evidence showing that a tidy environment creates a proud and stronger community. Rotary can play a very simple role in strengthening our communities and with minimal effort make Rotarians more aware of the environment.
When: Rotary Spring Clean is officially starting on 12 March 2012, the start of Climate Week and ends on Earth Day, on 22 April 2012. Clubs and Districts are encouraged to carry out their own initiatives at any appropriate time within 2012. Some Clubs are marking Rotary Week (23 Feb) with RSC projects.

Contestants were required to prepare a healthy two course meal for two costing no more than £14. They were marked on a range of criteria including presentation and a tasting test.
The competition was judged by Russell Bateman Head Chef at Colette’s Restaurant at The Grove Hotel, Phillip Candy Head of School Food Academy, and Andy Wakefield Co-ordinator Food Academy West Herts College.
The winner was Chloe Ware of Townsend Church of England School who prepared a beautifully presented dish of monkfish with butternut squash fondant and sauce vierge followed by an imaginative citrus meringue tart with cinnamon cream and mixed berries.
