The Cape Town based medical charity ‘Abundant
Life' will shortly receive its first batch of 14 Syringe Drivers under a
project organised by local Rotary Clubs and supported by UK hospices.
Syringe drivers are injection devices that automatically
deliver a prescribed quantity of palliative medicine at set intervals without
the need for a nurse. They are being donated by UK hospices that are required
to replace their existing units with models which comply with the latest
medical and other regulations.
These units, a small part of over 90 pieces
pledged from various UK hospices so far, were passed to Rotarians Dieter Shaw
(Amersham Rotary Club) and Frank Taylor (Hatfield Rotary Club) by Rtn Bob
Jenner OBE of the Basingstoke Rotary Club (District 1110) and originated from
David Monkman, Director, St Michael's Hospice, Basingstoke. They are part of a
Matching Grant project that includes the provision of medical equipment to
enable terminally ill patients in South Africa to live out their final days at
home. The grant application, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Amersham District
1260 (D1260) and the Rotary Club of Claremont, Cape Town, District 9350, also
includes a car to enable the palliative nurse to get to patients' homes.

Rotary
International and ShelterBox, a grassroots
disaster relief organization, signed a project partner agreement this month,
allowing the two organizations to collaborate more closely to provide relief
and temporary shelter to survivors of natural disasters.
"Project
partner" is a special status RI gives to groups started or managed by Rotary
clubs. The agreement will build on the strengths of both organizations in
responding to disasters all over the world.
"Our
Rotary friends have always been there ready to assist - from generous donations
to direct operational support on the ground Rotary has always been part of our
DNA," said Tom Henderson, ShelterBox CEO. "I feel like we have 34,000
ShelterBox offices around the world working together to help those who have
lost everything when they need us the most."

The final 1% of the job of eradicating polio from the world will be the most difficult #rotaryendpolio. From having 125 plio-endemic countries to just 4 has been an amazing result, and Rotary International has been a key player in this task, having volunteered their time and personal resources to reach more than two billion children in 122 countries with the oral polio vaccine. www.rotary.org/EndPolio. It's important that the world gets behind World Polio Day on Monday 24th October, and commits to eradicating this vicious disease.

On a recent trip to South Africa I was able to spend some time with Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Knysna where an outwardly wealthy town has pockets of abject poverty in a number of small townships nearby. The Rotary club is helping with a feeding programme for pre-school children. Youngsters, often from very poor backgrounds, are supplied with a morning meal made from ePap, a balanced mixture of nutritional ingredients that will set them up for the day.
Figures show that children who benefit from this programme are more attentive and achieve better academic results. These pre-school establishments are usually in some ones home, often a self-built shack with two rooms with as many as 20 or more children to be looked after. Most of the children looked well, laughing and singing. Every place was spotlessly clean.
