DG Sandy joins RIBI President, David Fowler in asking Rotarians to help rebuild the lives of millions shattered by the Haitian earthquake.
22nd January. As Rotarians and Inner Wheelers will know from the harrowing TV coverage, the people of Haiti, the poorest nation in the western hemisphere are suffering unbelievable torment with remarkably good grace and stoic resilience. With poor, broken infrastructure, no residual Government as such, international aid is now reaching people in the streets of Port-au-Prince. Supplies are also being air dropped to surrounding areas. Camps are now being established. The priority remains for clean water, shelter, food and medical supplies: Much is available but too little is still not getting through, it is claimed.
As we close this evolving article first posted last Saturday, we hear cheering news tonight that as aid begins to flow, ShelterBox is not only providing shelter for post-operative care patients it is today setting up 4 initial tent villages to 'house' between 500 and 1,000 people at each. Very soon shelter for another 70,000 people will be in place. For a local (Rotarian) assessment of current and future needs please view the minutes of a recent meeting in D7020. You can view the special CNN video report on ShelterBox deployments issued 29th Jan.

Gt Missenden RC's T4L Schools web page goes national
Impressed by its potential to engage all schools in RIBI land in the run up to Rotary Day, the RIBI D4L team has added Gt Missenden's Schools link page as a new resource on its 'For Schools' section. A similar page, written for businesses/employers has also been added to the RIBI site (click the picture to enlarge and see an index to the full range of resources now available for Clubs).

The Rotary Club of Great Missenden has successfully completed a
mini-project. At the request of RC of Bombay, 104 copies were sent
straight away as the kids would benefit most from their current school
term. RC of Hoddesdon and RC Club of Misbourne Matins from our
neighbouring District 1090 contributed. RC of Bombay covered the local
costs (customs clearance, delivery etc.). TOTAL cost:est. £625.
In
the picture, a copy of the book is being officially handed over by
President of the RC of Bombay, Nandan Damani, to Neeta Pradhan of the
NGO collaborating with their school's project.

Congratulations and thanks to those 36 Clubs supportinginternational activities this year
These include the District coordinated and Gt Missenden's Dictionaries for Life (literacy) projects, the Box Appeals and 5 other Foundation supported matching grant projects. Supporting Education, Water and Health programmes, the matching grant projects are variousely sponsored by Amptill & District, Luton, Milton Keynes, Stevenage Grange & Wolverton & Stony Stratford.
Help us champion and celebrate your international [and other] projects: As Stephen Sypula (International Chair) and Mervyn Edwards (Foundation Chair) complete their experiment to conduct six joint half-year zone based rallies, it is evident that so much more is happening on the International front that goes un-recorded and is lost therfore for the benefit of others.

There's not much one can teach Rotarians when it comes to literacy matters. Following John Moss's (Wolverton & Stony Stratford) presentation to District Council on 15th July, 58% (31) of our Clubs are now supporting the Dictionary for Life (D4L) project. It clearly touched a verb.
With their support and a good chunk of DDF contributed by our Foundation Committee the matching grant application, signed by DG Sandy, on behalf of participating Clubs, was sent off on 27th July, and approved by the Trustees on 31st August. The project will distribute at least 4,110 dictionaries to over 50 schools in KwaZula Natal, S.A., with the help of our friends in the RC of Ballito. The net cost of each Dictionary to Clubs, after TRF & District support, should work out at around 90p with Customs and other charges built in.
