ShelterBox wins ‘Nobel Prize’

shelterbox.jpgShelterBox was recently awarded the Beacon Fellowship Award for New Initiatives, described by Iain Young, Disaster Response Coordinator for RIBI’s International Service Committee as the charity world’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize. 

The award, earlier received by Sir Bob Geldof, caps off a remarkable year for ShelterBox as will be appreciated from their December Newsletter.

A Lost Year, A Lost Education

In 2006 My Rotary friends in KwaZulu Natal asked for help to find a sponsor to fund a classroom for the children of the 'ant' school. So named because the children sat on the dirt floor in a hut crawling with ants. Hitchin Tilehouse came up trumps and with two other sponsors three classrooms were built. A number of Rotarians from this district paid a visit in October 2006.

MK Zone Gala in aid of PolioPlus

It was the day the BBC choose to target ‘Children in Need’ and the 8 clubs from the Milton Keynes Rotary Zone choose to concentrate on raising funds for children across the world who are at risk from the terrible disease that is Polio. 

So, on November 14th, 200 people gathered together for an evening of eating, drinking, fun, dancing and friendship whilst raising some money towards matching the $100,000,000 that the Bill Gates foundation has pledged to Rotary worldwide for the eradication of polio, if we (Rotary International ) can match the sum in 3 years.

Sierra Leone 2007

slkids.jpgIn 2001 the Rotary Mission Challenge (RMC) project was established to offer volunteer support to the Child Birth Fistula and Paediatric Clinic.  Since the scheme began 460 Rotarians/friends have gone to Sierra Leone as members of 13 RMC teams each of which stayed 12 days.  I was member of RMC 11 which was in Sierra Leone from 1st to 12th October.
