Potters Bar Rotary Club are 50! Print E-mail
Written by Mike Thorpe

pottersbaranniversary.jpgOn Saturday 17th October 2009 Potters Bar Rotary Club held the 50th Anniversary Dinner at the Beales Hotel Hatfield.

It was a great evening attend by 158 people. 11 other Rotary Clubs attended to support us from Brookmans Park (our Daughter Club), Hatfield (our Mother Club), St Albans Priory, St Albans, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Hitchin Tilehouse, Chesham, Luton North, Amwell and our German Contact Club, Hilden Haan.

We had 6 Past District Governors, Norman Davison, Les Lee, Paul Denton, Derek Adams, Roy Watson and Bryan Archer and the District Governor Elect Amanda Watkin.

We invited as our guests 4 main charities we have supported over the years, Edwin Doidge ( Mencap/Wayside Jubilee Centre/Children with Special Needs ), Sir Paul Holden ( Sight Savers International ), Rob Loader ( St John Ambulance ) and Janice O'Neill ( Keech Hospice Care ). Edwin Doige thanked the club on behalf of all the charities.

Rotarian Roger Philpott presented President Pat with a signed copy of a book "The story of 50 years of service". The President of Hilden Haan Rotary Club, Heribert Streier, presented Pat with a Silver Commemorative Plaque and 500 euros for our Charity Fund. His daughter Jeanette made a brilliant speech in perfect english.

We invited 2 special guests:-  Michael Perham, who was presented with an Achievement Award for "30,000 miles of sheer courage" by President Pat Rowatt and "41 Club" Chairman John Connell, who our club have been closely associated with over the years.

Kristina Stanek, a Rotary Foundation Scholar from Germany studying at the Royal College of Music on a Rotary Scholarship, performed two wonderful Musical Interludes.

Overall, a wonderful evening celebrating Rotary.

A Thought...

glennestessl.jpg"One of the most wonderful things about Rotary is that it allows you to be part of something so much larger than yourself."

Glenn E. Estess Snr., RI President 2005.

Nothing Changes...

paul-harris.jpg"I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begun. There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will. Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do. Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress."

Paul Harris - The Rotarian February 1945
