Splashing the Cash on Sport and the Arts in Luton Print E-mail
Written by Rotary Club of Luton

luton-youth-concert-bandweb.jpgFor a Club as old as Luton, chartered in 1927, it often surprises other neighbouring clubs that we have the energy and enterprise to still be raising sizeable sums of money to distribute to the Luton community.

Accordingly, I thought it appropriate to list a few of the distributions of late to both Sport and the Arts in the Borough:-

  • £1,500,  To Luton United Athletic Club for youth development.
  • £500, To Stockwood Park U13 Rugby Club players for new shirts and wet weather tops.
  • £500, To Lewsey Boxing Club for new vests.
  • £1,000, To Luton Youth Concert Band and a pledge for two more years.
  • £500, To Luton Music Club to continue to feature as one of the best Music Clubs in the South of England.
  • £250, To Luton Light Amateur Theatre Group to celebrate their 60th Anniversary.

President Tim Watson said "he was extremely pleased that the Club was in a financial position to support such a diverse range of community activities at a time of falling membership and a constrained economy".    In addition the Club recently gave £1,000 to Luton Women's Refuge, £200 to Luton and Dunstable Hospital Radio and have pledged £3,000 to the proposed Town Centre Chaplaincy Project. They also annually support the Keech Hospices with sizeable donations.

As you know it takes a considerable effort to raise sums of this magnitude and Club members are still very active with fundraising events such as Boxing Nights, Sporting Dinners and a highly successful Sporting Quiz.

A Thought...

glennestessl.jpg"One of the most wonderful things about Rotary is that it allows you to be part of something so much larger than yourself."

Glenn E. Estess Snr., RI President 2005.

Nothing Changes...

paul-harris.jpg"I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begun. There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will. Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do. Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress."

Paul Harris - The Rotarian February 1945
