Tailored site for schools - Rotary Day/Thanks for Life Print E-mail
Written by Guru Guruswamy

t4lsite22dec09.jpgGt Missenden RC's T4L Schools web page goes national

Impressed by its potential to engage all schools in RIBI land in the run up to Rotary Day, the RIBI D4L team has  added Gt Missenden's Schools link page as a new resource on its 'For Schools'  section.  A similar page, written for businesses/employers has also been added to the RIBI site (click the picture to enlarge and see an index to the full range of resources now available for Clubs).

The simple schools' web page provides an effective medium to both attract interest and distribute information to schools by building on the enthusiasm young people & students have in surfing the net. It may be of interest to Clubs when promoting Rotary Day / Thanks for life specially with Heads. The idea was originally put forward at a Zonal International/Foundation meeting. Colleagues seeing its potential requested that the resource be made available to other Clubs so that they could point their schools to the site and thus avoid duplicated effort.

A single page on our club website has been developed that could help pupils, teachers and parents know what it is all about. It has all the essential information. It is at: http://www.greatmissendenrotary.org.uk/schools  Distractions from ads and to other sites has been kept to a minimum.

On the website, there is a range of materials to interest people of all ages to browse through – from a simple slide show, a publication in ‘comics’ form, a fact sheet, a poster, short trailers of a documentary which was nominated for an Academy Award called ‘The Final Inch’ etc. There also some ideas for fund raising and how they can donate ... including 'justgiving' on line account for adults.

We also have a standard letter that was sent to the Headteachers. In it we say:

"While our Club’s primary objective is to raise awareness, there are also some ideas for fund raising on that day. Just £1 can save lives of five children as Rotary and other organisations battle the final stage in eradicating Polio. For instance, pupils can wear something ‘purple’ on that day to mark the event as i
t is the colour of the ink used to identify each child that has been given the Polio vaccine. Kids can colour the nail of the small left finger in purple. Canten staff can put purple coloured icing on the cakes.

We would appreciate it if you could join us in this effort by:
  1. Providing a link from the Home Page of your school website to a specific page on our club website for a few days/weeks around 23 Feb 2010. [Your webmaster can link it to: http://www.greatmissendenrotary.org.uk/schools and if possible use a reduced size of the graphics image which is at the top of this letter].
  2. Publicising it amongst your teachers, pupils and parents
  3. Having a Rotary Collection Box for any donations in an appropriate place in the school...."
Clubs are welcome to use this or adapt it to their situations. A Thought...

glennestessl.jpg"One of the most wonderful things about Rotary is that it allows you to be part of something so much larger than yourself."

Glenn E. Estess Snr., RI President 2005.

Nothing Changes...

paul-harris.jpg"I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begun. There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will. Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do. Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress."

Paul Harris - The Rotarian February 1945
