On Saturday 12th June 9 volunteers gathered at The London Gliding Club to take up the Wolverton and Stony Stratford challenge of doing a sponsored loop-the-loop in a glider.
The weather was perfect for flying and after a safety briefing, one by one they took to the air.
Sitting in front of the two seater glider, our volunteers were airplane towed to 2000 feet before being released to glide. After a short while the pilot puts the glider into a dive towards the ground before pulling the craft up into a loop.
Two of the volunteers were Rotarians who had taken part in earlier ‘loop’ events and had come back for more. Together with the other seven they all enjoyed the experience. Some did several loops before gliding along the Dunstable Downs for a while before landing. Robin Haseldine of Wolverton and Stony Stratford Rotary club was waiting for them and their supporters with barbecued sausages and steak burgers. The Gliding Club bar provided the liquid refreshment. The picture is of Bletchley Rotarian Luing Cowley, a former air pilot in the 2nd world war and our oldest flyer, and Freddy Moss, just 17 and grandson of Wolverton and Stony Stratford Rotarian John Moss.
The charities being supported are the Zulu School initiative in South Africa and Hope Outreach working for the underprivileged in Sri Lanka.
