Rotary Young Chef - Watford Heat Print E-mail
Written by Peter Clark
watford_young_chef_5.jpgThe Watford club held the local heat of the Rotary Young Chef Competition at West Herts College on Saturday November 26. There were nine contestants from five local schools.

Contestants were required to prepare a healthy two course meal for two costing no more than £14. They were marked on a range of criteria including presentation and a tasting test.

The competition was judged by Russell Bateman Head Chef at Colette’s Restaurant at The Grove Hotel, Phillip Candy Head of School Food Academy, and Andy Wakefield Co-ordinator Food Academy West Herts College.

The winner was Chloe Ware of Townsend Church of England School who prepared a beautifully presented dish of monkfish with butternut squash fondant and sauce vierge followed by an imaginative citrus meringue tart with cinnamon cream and mixed berries. The runner up was Abigail Hurst of Watford Girls Grammar School.  First prize, donated by The Grove Hotel was a meal for four at the prestigious Colettes Restaurantwatford_young_chef_3.jpg and the opportunity for the winner to spend a day in the kitchens and restaurants at The Grove Hotel under the supervision of Russell Bateman. The runner up won a meal for four at the West Herts College training restaurant. The winner will also go forward to the district final with a chance to proceed through to the national finals.

The competition was well supported by an enthusiastic audience who were delighted to sample the dishes after the judging. The competition was organised by Richard Wheeler of the Watford club who said “We were very impressed with the standard of entries this year and wish Chloe every success as she continues to the next level”.

The photos attached show: winner, Chloe Ware with official guest Councillor Lindsey Scudder, Chairman Watford Borough Council and  Club president Peter O’Connor and some of the audience sampling the dishes.

A Thought...

glennestessl.jpg"One of the most wonderful things about Rotary is that it allows you to be part of something so much larger than yourself."

Glenn E. Estess Snr., RI President 2005.

Nothing Changes...

paul-harris.jpg"I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begun. There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will. Even to hang on to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do. Rotary simply must continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress."

Paul Harris - The Rotarian February 1945
